To The Corinthians A

Chapter 1

Paul, a called apostle of Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes, the brother, 2 to the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I always give thanks to God concerning you for the grace of God given to you in Jesus Christ, 5 because in everything you were enriched in him, in all speech and knowledge, 6 as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, 7 so as you would not be wanting in any gift, as you await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ; 8 who also will confirm you until the end to be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, through whom you were called to the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now I beseech you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all say the same thing, and there not be divisions among you, but you may be joined together in the same mind and the same opinion. 11 For it was shown to me concerning you, my brothers, by them of Chloe, that there are strifes among you. 12 Now I say this, because each of you says:  I indeed am of Paul, but I of Apollos, but I of Cephas, but I of Christ. 13 Has Christ been divided?  Was Paul crucified on your behalf, or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I give thanks that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius; 15 lest anyone should say that you were baptized in my name. 16 But I also baptized the household of Stephanas; for the rest I do not recall if I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to evangelize, not in wisdom of speech, lest the cross of Christ be made vain.

18 For on one hand the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, on the other it is the power of God to we who are being saved. 19 For it has been written:  I will destroy the wisdom of the wise ones, and I will set aside the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise man?  Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of this world foolish? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world did not know God through its wisdom, God thought it well to save those who would believe through the folly of the proclamation. 22 Seeing that both Jews ask signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 yet we proclaim Christ who was crucified, on one hand an offence to Jews, on the other folly to nations, 24 but to those who are called, both to Jews and to Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolish thing of God is wiser than men, and the weak thing of God is stronger than men. 26 For you see your calling, brothers, that not many of you were wise men according to flesh, not many powerful, not many well born; but God chose the foolish things of the world in order that he might shame the wise men, and God chose the weak things of the world in order that he might shame the strong things, 28 and God chose the base things of the world and the things that are despised, the things that are not, in order that he might abolish the things that are, 29 so as no flesh might boast before God. 30 And you are his in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God to us, both righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 in order that as it has been written, “The one who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”

Chapter 2

And when I came to you, brothers, I did not come according to excellence of speech or of wisdom announcing to you the testimony of God. 2 For I decided not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and this one who had been crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my speech and my proclamation were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of spirit and of power, 5 in order that your faith may not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

6 But we speak wisdom among those who are perfect, yet not wisdom of this age neither of the leaders of this age, of those who are being brought to naught; 7 but we speak a wisdom of God in mystery, that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the ages for our glory; 8 which not one of the leaders of this age has known; for if they knew, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but as it has been written, “Things which the eye did not see nor did the ear hear nor came upon the heart of man, how much has God prepared for those who love him.” 10 For God revealed them to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who of men knows the things of a man except the Spirit of a man that is in him?  So also no one has known the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 And we did not receive the spirit of the world, but the Spirit from God, in order that we may know the things freely given to us by God; 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught of human wisdom, but in words taught of the Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things. 14 But a natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; for they are folly to him, and he cannot know them, because they are discerned spiritually. 15 But on one hand the spiritual man discerns all things, on the other he is discerned by no one. 16 For who knew the mind of the Lord, who will instruct him?  But we have the mind of Christ.

Chapter 3

And I, brothers, was not able to speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to fleshy, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not food; for you were not then able.  But yet neither are you able now, for you are still fleshly.  For whereas there are jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and walk according to man? 4 For whenever anyone says:  I am of Paul, and another: I am of Apollos, are you not men? 5 What therefore is Apollos?  And what is Paul?  Ministers through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave to each one. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God made to grow; 7 so as neither the one who plants is anything nor is the one who waters, but God is the one who makes to grow. 8 So the one who plants and the one who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are fellow-workers of God; you are a tillage of God, a building of God. 10 I laid a foundation according to the grace of God given to me as a wise master builder, but another builds on it.  But let each one watch how he builds on it. 11 For no one is able to lay another foundation beside the one that has been laid, who is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation gold, silver, precious stones, woods, hay, or stubble, 13 the work of each one will become manifest; for the day will declare it, because it is revealed by fire, and the fire will prove it, the work of each one, of what sort it is. 14 If the work of anyone which he built on the foundation remains, he will receive the reward; 15 if the work of anyone will be consumed, he will suffer loss, but he will be saved, yet so as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are a shrine of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the shrine of God, God will defile this man; for the shrine of God is holy, which you are.

18 Let no one deceive himself; if anyone thinks to be wise among you in this age, let him become foolish, in order that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God.  For it has been written, “The one who catches the wise in their craftiness;” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain. 21 Therefore let no one boast in men; for all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come, all things are yours, 23 and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

Chapter 4

So let a man reckon us as attendants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries. 2 Moreover it is sought among stewards that one be found faithful. 3 And it is for a very little thing to me that I am judged by you or by a human day of judgment; but I do not judge myself; 4 for I know nothing against myself, but I have not been justified by this; but the one who judges me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge nothing before time, until the Lord comes, who will both shed light on the hidden things of darkness and manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then the praise will be from God to each one. 6 Now these things, brothers, I adapted to myself and Apollos because of you, in order that you may learn among us not to think above what things have been written, lest you are puffed up on behalf of the one against the other one. 7 For who distinguishes you?  And what do you have which you did not receive?  And if indeed you did receive, why do you boast as if you did not receive? 8 Now you are glutted; now you became rich; you reigned without us; and it really is an advantage that you reigned, in order that we might also reign with you. 9 For, I think, God showed forth us the apostles last as doomed to death, because we became a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools because of Christ, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are held in honor, but we are unhonored. 11 Until the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked and buffeted and unsettled 12 and labor, working with our own hands; being reviled we bless, being persecuted we endure, 13 being defamed we beseech; we became as refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things until now.

14 I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 25 For you may have ten thousand trainers in Christ, yet not many fathers; for I begat you in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 Therefore I beseech you, become imitators of me. 17 Because of this very thing I sent Timothy to you, who is a beloved child of mine and faithful in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, as I teach everywhere in every church. 18 Now when I did not come to you, some were puffed up; 19 but I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know not only the speech of those who have been puffed up, but the power; 20 for the kingdom of God is not in speech, but in power. 21 What do you will?  Do I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of meekness?

Chapter 5

Fornication is actually heard among you, and such fornication which is not among the nations, so as one has his father's wife. 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, in order that the one who has done this deed might be removed from your midst? 3 For indeed I, who am absent in the body, but am present in the spirit, have as if I were present already judged the one who has wrought this thing, 4 in the name of the Lord Jesus, when you and my spirit are assembled with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 to deliver such a person to Satan for destruction of the flesh, in order that their spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. 6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens all the lump? 7 Purge out the old leaven, in order that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened.  For indeed Christ was our Passover sacrifice. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven nor with leaven of malice and evil, but with unleavened loaves of sincerity and truth. 9 I wrote to you in my epistle to not associate intimately with fornicators, 10 but to not dissociate altogether with the fornicators of this world, nor with the covetous and rapacious or idolaters, since you would have to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you to not associate intimately with anyone who is called a brother that is a fornicator or a covetous man or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or a rapacious man, to not eat with such a man. 12 For what is it to me to judge those who are without the church?  Do you not judge those who are within? 13 But God will judge those who are without.  Remove the evil man out of yourselves.

Chapter 6

Does anyone of you who has a matter against another dare to be judged before the unjust, and not before the saints? 2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world?  And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy of very little judgments? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels, not to mention the things of this life? 4 Therefore if you indeed have matters to judge of this life, do you sit those in the church who are despised as judges? 5 For I speak to shame you.  Thus is there no room among you for one wise man, who will be able to discern his brother in your midst? 6 But brother is judged with brother, and this before unbelievers? 7 Now therefore there is indeed a total failure with you that you have lawsuits with yourselves.  Why not rather be wronged?  Why not rather be deprived? 8 But you do wrong and deprive, and this to your brothers. 9 Or do you not know that unrighteous men will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be led astray; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor voluptuous persons, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves nor rapacious persons will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And some of you were these things; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

12 All things are lawful to me, but not all things are expedient.  All things are lawful for me, but I will not be ruled by anyone. 13 Foods for the belly, and the belly for foods; but God will destroy both this and these.  But the body is not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body; 14 and God both raised the Lord and will raise us up through his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?  Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?  May it not be.  16 Or do you not know that the one who is joined to a harlot is one body with her?  For he says, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But the one who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. 18 Flee fornication.  Every sin whichever a man may do is outside the body; but the one who commits fornication sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a shrine of the Holy Spirit in you, which you have from God and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

Chapter 7

Now about the things of which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman; 2 but because of the fornication let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband pay his debt to the wife, and likewise the wife also to the husband. 4 The wife does not have authority of her own body, but the husband; and likewise the husband does not have authority of his own body, but the wife. 5 Do not deprive each other, unless by agreement for a time in order that you may have leisure for prayer, and you may be together again, lest Satan tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 Now I say this by allowance, not by command. 7 And I wish all men to be as even myself; but each man has his own gift of God, one thus, another thus.

8 Now I speak to the unmarried men and to the widows, it is good for them if they also remain as I; 9 but if they do not exercise self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn. 10 But to those who have married I enjoin, not I but the Lord, a woman to not be separated from her husband, 11 but if indeed she is separated, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband, - and a husband is not to leave his wife. 12 And to the rest I say, not the Lord:  If any brother has an unbelieving wife, and this one consents to dwell with him, let him not leave her; 13 and a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and this one consents to dwell with her, let her not leave her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified by the brother; since then your children were unclean, but now they are holy. 15 But if the unbelieving one separates him or her self, let him or her be separated; the brother or sister has not been enslaved in such matters; but God has called you in peace. 16 For what do you know, wife, if you will save your husband?  Or what do you know, husband, if you will save your wife? 17 Only as to each has the Lord divided, as God has called each, so let him walk.  And I command so in all the churches. 18 Was anyone called who has been circumcised?  Do not let him be uncircumcised.  Has anyone been called in uncircumcision?  Do not let him be circumcised. 19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Each one in the calling in which he was called, let him remain in this. 21 Were you called as a slave?  Let it not matter to you; but if indeed you are able to become free, rather use it. 22 For one who is called in the Lord while a slave is a freed man of the Lord; likewise the one who is called while a free man is a slave of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Each one in what state he was called, brothers, let him remain with God.

25 Now about your virgins I do not have a command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who has had mercy by the Lord to be faithful. 26 I suppose therefore this to be good because of the present necessity, that it is good for a man to be so. 27 Have you been bound to a woman?  Do not seek release.  Have you been released from a woman?  Do not seek a woman. 28 But if indeed you marry, you do not sin, and if the virgin marries, she does not sin; but such will have affliction in the flesh, and I am sparing you. 29 But I say this, brothers, the time is shortened; for the remaining time in order that both those who have wives may be as those who do not have, 30 and those who weep as those who do not weep, and those who rejoice as those who do not rejoice, and those who buy as those who do not own anything, 31 and those who use the world as those who do not abuse it; for the fashion of this world is passing away. 32 But I wish you to be without care.  The unmarried man cares for the things of the Lord, 33 how he may please the Lord; but the one who has married cares for the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and has been divided.  And the unmarried woman and the virgin cares for the things of the Lord, in order that she may be holy both in the body and in the spirit; but the one who has married cares for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 And I say this for your advantage, not in order that I may put a restraint on you, but for the comely thing and waiting undistractedly for the Lord. 36 But if anyone thinks he is behaving dishonorably toward his virgin, if she is past the bloom of youth, and ought to be so, let him do what he wishes; he does not sin; let them marry.  37 But he who stands firm in his heart, not having necessity, but has authority concerning his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his virgin, he will do well. 38 So as both the one who marries his virgin does well, and the one who does not marry will do better. 39 A wife has been bound for so long a time as her husband lives; but if the husband sleeps, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she remains so, according to my opinion; and I think I also have the Spirit of God.

Chapter 8

Now about the adulterous sacrifices, we know that we all have knowledge.  Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up; if anyone thinks to have known anything, 2 he does not yet know as he should know; 3 but if anyone loves God, this one has been known by him. 4 Therefore, about the eating of idolatrous sacrifices, we know that idols are nothing in the world, and that there is no God except one. 5 For even if there are what are called gods either in heaven or on earth, even as there are many gods and many lords, 6 yet to us there is one God the Father, of whom are all things and we are in him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and we are through him. 7 But this knowledge is not in all men; and some by habit until now still eat of the idol as an idolatrous sacrifice, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food will not commend us to God; neither are we behind if we do not eat, nor do we excel if we eat. 9 But look out lest somehow your authority becomes the stumbling-block to the weak ones. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge sitting in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat the idolatrous sacrifices? 11 For the one who is weak, the brother because of whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 And so you sin against Christ by sinning against your brothers and wounding their consciences that are weak. 13 Wherefore if food offends my brother, I will by no means eat flesh unto the age, lest I offend my brother.

Chapter 9

Am I not free?  Am I not an Apostle? Have I not seen the Lord Jesus?  Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet indeed I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 3 My defense to those who examine me is this. 4 Do we not have authority to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have authority to lead about a sister, a wife, as also the rest of the apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas? 6 Or do I and Barnabas only have the authority not to work? 7 Who soldiers at his own expense at any time?  Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit?  Or who shepherds a flock and does not eat of the milk of the flock? 8 I do not speak these things according to man, for does not the law say these things? 9 For it has been written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox that is threshing.” Does not the ox matter to God? 10 Or does he say it altogether because of us?  For it was written because of us, because the one who plows ought to plough on hope, and the one who threshes on hope of partaking. 11 If we sowed spiritual things to you, is it a great thing if we shall reap fleshly things from you? 12 If others have a share of this authority over you, rather not we?  But we did not use this authority, but we put up with all things lest we should give anyone an obstacle to the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who perform sacred duties eat the things of the temple, those who attend the altar partake with the altar? 14 So also the Lord ordained those who announce the gospel to live of the gospel. 15 But I have not used one of these things.  And I did not write these things in order that it might be so in me; for it is good for me to rather die than any man shall empty my boast. 17 For if I preach good news, I have no boast; for necessity is laid on me; for woe is to me if I do not preach good tidings. 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What therefore is my reward?  That when I preach good tidings I may place the good tidings without charge, so as not to use my full authority in the good tidings. 19 For while I was free of all men I enslaved myself to all men, in order that I might gain the more; 20 and I became as a Jew to the Jews, in order that I might gain the Jews; to those under the law as under the law, not being under the law myself, in order that I might gain those who are under the law; 21 to those without the law as without the law, not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, in order that I may gain those without the law; 22 I became weak to the weak, in order that I might gain the weak; I have become all things to all men, in order that in any case I might save some. 23 But I do all things because of the good tidings, in order that I may become a joint partaker of it. 24 Do you not know that those who run in a racecourse all run indeed, but one receives the prize?  So run in order that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes exercises self-control in all things, those indeed therefore in order that they may receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. 26 Accordingly, I so run as not aimlessly, I so box as not beating air; 27 but I treat my body severely and lead it as a slave, lest when I have proclaimed to others I may become disapproved myself.

Chapter 10

For I do not want you to become ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized to Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed, and the rock was the Christ. 5 But God was not well-pleased with the majority of them; for they were scattered in the desert. 6 Now these things were types of us, so that we should not be longers after evil things, as indeed those longed. 7 Neither be idolaters, as some of them; as it has been written, “The people sat to eat and to drink, and stood up to play.” 8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Neither let us over-tempt the Lord, as some of them tempted and were destroyed by serpents. 10 Neither murmur, even as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to those men as types, and were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages has arrived. 12 Therefore the one who thinks he stands let him look lest he falls. 13 Temptation has not taken you except what is human; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, but will also make the way out of your temptation so that you may be able to endure.

14 Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to prudent men, you judge what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we the many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers of the altar? 19 What therefore do I say?  That an idolatrous sacrifice is anything? 20 But the things which they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to become sharers of the demons. 21 You cannot drink a cup of the Lord and a cup of demons; you cannot partake of a table of the Lord and of a table of demons. 22 Or do we make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than he?

23 All things are lawful, but not all things are expedient; all things are lawful, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own thing, but the thing of the other. 25 Eat everything that is sold in a meat market examining nothing because of conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, “This is slain in sacrifice,” do not eat because of the man who points it out and conscience; 29 but I say not of his own conscience, but that of the other.  For why is my freedom judged by another's conscience? 30 If I partake by grace, why am I spoken evil of because of what I give thanks for? 31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all things to the glory of God. 32 Be inoffensive both to Jews and to Greeks and to the church of God, 33 as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my advantage but that of the many, in order that they may be saved.

Chapter 11

Be imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.

2 But I praise you because you have remembered of me in all things and you hold fast the traditions as I delivered them to you. 3 But I wish you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man the head of a woman, and God the head of Christ. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies having anything down over his head shames his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled shames her head; for it is one and the same thing with the woman who has been shaved. 6 For If a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn; but if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be veiled. 7 For indeed a man's head ought not to be veiled, being the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of a man. 8 For man is not of woman, but woman of man; 9 for indeed man was not created because of the woman, but woman because of the man. 10 Therefore the woman ought to have authority on her head because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless neither is woman without man nor man without woman in the Lord; 12 for as the woman is of the man, so also the man is through the woman; but all things are of God. 13 You judge among yourselves; is it fitting for a woman to pray to God unveiled? 14 Does not nature herself teach you that indeed if a man wears his hair long it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman wears her hair long, it is a glory to her? Because the long hair has been given to her instead of a veil. 16 But if anyone thinks to be contentious, we do not have such a custom, neither the churches of God.

17 But charging this I do not praise you because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For firstly I hear there indeed are divisions among you when you come together in church, and I believe it in some part. 19 For indeed there must be sects among you, in order that the approved ones may also become manifest among you. 20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat a supper of the Lord; 21 for in eating each one takes his own supper before others, and one hungers, another is drunken. 22 Do you not have houses to eat and to drink?  Or do you despise God's church, and shame those who do not have?  What may I say to you?  Shall I praise you?  I do not praise in this. 23 For what I received from the Lord, I also delivered to you, that in the night in which he was betrayed the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body on your behalf; do this for my remembrance.” 25 Similarly also the cup after they supped, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, as often as you drink, for my remembrance.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you declare the Lord's death, until he comes. 27 Wherefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the Lord's cup unworthily, will be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread and let him drink of the cup; 29 for the one who eats and drinks not discerning the Lord's body eats and drinks judgment to himself. 30 Therefore many among you are weak and feeble and a number sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we should not be judged; 32 but we are chastened when we are judged by the Lord, lest we are condemned with the world. 33 Wherefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat wait for one another. 34 If anyone hungers, let him eat at home, lest you come together to judgment.  And I will arrange the remaining matters whenever I come.

Chapter 12

Now about the spiritual matters, brothers, I do not wish you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were nations how when you were led away you were led to the voiceless idols. 3 Wherefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is a curse;” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are differences of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are differences of ministries, and the same Lord; 6 and there are differences of operations, but the same God operating all things in all. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for their profit. 8 For to one is given a word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of cures by the one Spirit, 10 and to another operations of powers, and to another prophecy, and to another discernings of spirits, to another kinds of tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues; 11 and the one and the same spirit operates all these things, distributing to each one separately as he purposes. 12 For as the body is one and has many members, but though all the members of the body are many they are one body, so also is Christ's; 13 for indeed we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink. 14 For indeed the body is not one member but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” it is not because of this not of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” it is not because of this not of the body. 17 If all the body was an eye, where would be the hearing?  If all hearing, where the smelling? 18 But now God set the members, each one of them in the body as he wished. 19 And if all was one member, where would be the body? 20 But now there are many members, but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you;” 22 but by much more the members of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary, 23 and members of the body that we think are less honorable, we put round more abundant honor to these, and our uncomely members have more abundant comeliness, 24 but our comely members have no need.  But God blended the body together, giving more abundant honor to the members that lack, 25 lest there be division in the body, but the members should care the same on behalf of one another. 26 And whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or a member is glorified, all the members rejoice with it. 27 And you are a body of Christ and members in part. 28 And God firstly placed some apostles in the church, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then powers, then gifts of cures, helps, governings, kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? All prophets; or all teachers? All powers?  Do all have gifts of cures; or all speak with tongues; or all interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.  And yet I show to you the excellent way.

Chapter 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I have become sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And if I have prophecy and know all the mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but I do not have love, I am nothing. And if I dole out all my goods, and if I deliver my body in order that I shall be burned, but I do not have love, I am not profited anything. 4 Love suffers long, love is kind, is not jealous, love does not vaunt itself, is not puffed up, 5 does not act becomingly, does not seek things of herself, is not provoked, does not reckon the evil, 6 does not rejoice over wrong, but rejoices with the truth; 7 covers all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never falls; but whether there are prophecies, they will be abolished; or tongues, they will cease; or knowledge it will be abolished. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the complete thing comes, the partial thing will be abolished. 11 When I was an infant, I spoke as an infant, I thought as an infant, I reckoned as an infant; now that I have become a man, I have abolished the infantile things. 12 For yet we see through a mirror in a riddle, but then face to face; yet I know in part, but then I shall fully know as I also was fully known. 13 But now remain faith, hope, love, these three; and the greater of these is love.

Chapter 14

Pursue love, but eagerly desire the spiritual gifts, and rather in order that you may prophecy. 2 For the one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one hears, but he speaks mysteries in spirit; 3 but the one who prophesies to men speaks edification and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but the one who prophesies edifies a church. 5 Now I wish for you all to speak in tongues, but rather that you may prophesy; and the one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, except unless he interprets, in order that the church may receive edification. 6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you, except I speak to you either in revelation or in knowledge or in prophecy or in teaching? 7 Yet lifeless things that give a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they do not give a distinction in sounds, how will it be known the thing that is piped or the thing that is harped? 8 For indeed if a trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for war? 9 So also unless you give a clear word through the tongue, how will it be known the thing that is said?  For you will be speaking into air. 10 It may be there are so many kinds of sounds in the world, and not one is voiceless; 11 therefore if I do not know the power of the sound, I shall be a foreigner to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks a foreigner to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealots of spiritual things, seek that you may abound to the edification of the church. 13 Wherefore let the one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 Therefore what is it?  I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the mind; I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the mind. 16 Otherwise if you bless in the spirit, how will the one who occupies the place of the uninstructed say the "amen" at your giving thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For indeed you give thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I give thanks to God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 but in a church I wish to speak five words with my mind, in order that I may also instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, do not be children in your minds, but be infant-like in malice, and be mature in your minds. 21 It has been written in the law that I will speak to this people in other tongues and in other's lips, and even so they will not hear me, says the Lord. 22 Therefore the tongues are not a sign to those who believe but to the unbelievers, and the prophecy is not to the unbelievers but to those who believe. 23 If therefore the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and some uninstructed or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you rave? 24 But if all prophesy, and some unbeliever or uninstructed enters, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all, 25 the hidden things of his heart become manifest, and so falling on his face he will worship God, declaring that God is really among you. 26 What therefore is it, brothers?  Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation; let all things be for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, by two or at the most three, and in turn, 28 and let one interpret; but if there is not an interpreter, let him be silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 And let two or three prophets speak, 30 and let the others discern; but if something is revealed to another who sits, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy singly, in order that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not of tumult but of peace.  As in all the churches of the saints, 34 let the women be silent in the churches; for it is not permitted to them to speak, but let them be subject, as the law also says. 35 But if they wish to learn anything, let them question their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in a church. 36 Or did the word of God go forth from you, or did it reach only to you? 37 If anyone thinks to be a prophet or a spiritual man, let him clearly know that the things which I write to you are a command of the Lord; 38 but if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues; 40 let all things be done becomingly and according to order.

Chapter 15

Now I make known to you, brothers, the good tidings which I preached to you, which you also received, in which you also stand, 2 through which you are also saved, if you hold fast to what word I preached to you, except unless you believed in vain. 3 For among the first things I delivered to you, what I also received, that Christ died on behalf of our sins according to the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he has been raised on the third day according to the scriptures, 5 and that he was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve; 6 afterward he was seen by over five hundred brothers at one time, of whom the majority remain until now, though some fell asleep; 7 afterward he was seen by James, then by all the apostles; 8 and lastly of all he was also seen by me, even as if to one abnormally born. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not sufficient to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God; 10 but I am what I am by the grace of God, and his grace to me was not empty, but I labored more abundantly than them all, yet not I but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether therefore I or those, so we proclaim and so you believed.

12 But if Christ is proclaimed the he has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is not a resurrection of dead persons? 13 Now if there is not a resurrection of dead persons, neither has Christ been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is empty, and your faith is empty; 15 and we are also found to be false witnesses of God, because we witnessed concerning God that he raised Christ, whom if he did not raise then dead persons are not raised. 16 For if dead persons are not raised, neither has Christ been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is useless, you are still in your sins. 18 Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ also perished. 19 If we only have hope in Christ in this life, we are more pitiful than all men. 20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruit of those who have fallen asleep.

21 For since death came through a man, a resurrection of dead persons came through a man also. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruit, afterward those of Christ in his coming, 24 then the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God even the Father, when he abolishes all rule and authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he puts all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be abolished is death; for he subjected all things under his feet. 27 But when he says that all things have been subjected, it is clear that it is apart from the one who subjected all things to him, then also the Son himself will be subjected to the one who subjected all things to him, in order that God may be all things in all. 29 Otherwise what will they do who have been baptized on behalf of the dead? If dead persons are not actually raised, why indeed are they baptized on their behalf? 30 Why are we also in danger every hour? 31 I die daily, for the boasting of you, brothers, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If after the manner of man I fought with wild beasts in Ephesus, what would it profit me? If dead persons are not raised, let us eat and let us drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 Do not be led astray, “Bad associations corrupt good customs.” 34 Become righteously sober and do not sin; for some have ignorance of God; for I speak to shame you.

35 But someone will say, “How are the dead raised?  And with what sort of body do they come?” 36 Foolish man, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies; 37 and what you sow, you do not sow the body that is going to become, but it may be a naked grain of wheat or some one of the rest; 38 but God gives to it a body as he wishes, and to each of the seeds its own body. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but one of men, and another flesh of animals, and another flesh of birds, and another of fishes. 40 And there are heavenly bodies, and earthly bodies; but indeed the glory of the heavenly is one kind, and that of the earthly is another. 41 One glory of the sun, another of glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. 42 So also the resurrection of the dead.  It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.  If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it has been written, “The first man Adam became a living soul;” the last Adam a live-giving spirit. 46 But the spiritual was not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was earthy, out of earth, the second man out of heaven. 48 Such the earthy man, such also the earthy ones, and such the heavenly man, such also the heavenly ones; 49 and as we bore the image of the earthy man, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly man. 50 And I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, neither does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery:  We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in a glance of an eye, at the last trumpet; for a trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 This corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality.  54 And when this corruptible shall put on incorruption and this mortal shall put on immortality, then will be the word that has been written, “Death was swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, death, is your victory? Where, death, is your sting?” 56 Now the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks to God who gives to us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not empty in the Lord.

Chapter 16

Now about the collection for the saints, as I charged the churches of Galatia, so also do yourselves. 2 On the first day of every week let each of you put up by himself, storing up whatever he is prospered, lest when I come there are collections then. 3 And whenever I arrive, whomever you approve, I will send these through epistles to carry your gift to Jerusalem; 4 and if it is fitting for me to go, they shall go with me. 5 And I will come to you whenever I pass through Macedonia; for I will pass through Macedonia, 6 and possibly I will remain or even spend the winter with you, in order that you may set me forward wherever I may go. 7 For I do not wish to see you yet in passing; for I am hoping to remain some time with you, if the Lord permits. 8 But I will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost; 9 for a great and effective door opened to me and there are many who oppose. 10 Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without fear; for he works the work of the Lord as I also; 11 let no one therefore despise him.  But set him forward in peace, in order that he may come to me; for I am awaiting him with the brothers. 12 Now about my brother Apollos, I besought him much that he should come to you with the brothers; and it was not altogether his will that he should come now, but he will come whenever he has opportunity. 13 Be on watch, stand in the faith, play the man, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be in love.

15 Now I beseech you, brothers:  Recognize the household of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruit of Achaia and they appointed themselves to ministry to the saints; 16 in order that you may also submit to such ones and to everyone who works and labors with me. 17 Now I rejoice at the presence of Stephanas and of Fortunatus and of Achaicus, that these supplied your lack; 18 for they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore recognize such ones.

19 The churches of Asia greet you.  Aquila and Prisca, with the church in their house, greet you much in the Lord. 20 All the brothers greet you.  Greet one another with a holy kiss. 21 The greeting of Paul with my hand. 22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be a curse.  Maranatha. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. 24 My love be with you all in Christ Jesus.
